1. Introduction

The Grammar Index™ is operated by Alderstrom Limited ("we", "our", "us"), a company registered in the United Kingdom. We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our website, web application, Windows desktop application, and mobile applications. Our GDPR & Data Protection statement gives the additional detail required by UK and EU data-protection law and takes precedence if the two ever differ.

2. Information We Collect

Account Information

When you purchase a licence, we collect your name and email address to associate with your licence key and to send you purchase confirmations. When a Team, Institution or Gift / Sponsorship licence or a gift card is registered, we also record the registering owner's name and email address and, for a school or organisation, its name and (for UK schools) its DfE reference number (URN). To manage your devices you sign in with your email address and a short-lived code sent to it; we do not store passwords.

Payment Information

Payment processing is handled entirely by Stripe. We do not collect, store, or have access to your credit card or bank account details.

Device Information

When you activate The Grammar Index on a device, we generate a device fingerprint (a hashed identifier based on basic device properties) to manage device activations. This fingerprint cannot be used to identify you personally. Our activation server also records the platform, activation time and IP address of each activation and licence check, which we use to enforce seat limits and detect licence abuse (see our Licence Policy).

Usage Data

We do not track which grammar entries you view, search for, or how you use the application. The Grammar Index works offline — your usage data stays on your device.

3. How We Use Your Information

• To process your purchase and deliver your licence key

• To send purchase-related communications

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell, trade, or otherwise transfer your personal information to third parties, except:

• Stripe: For payment processing
• Twilio SendGrid: For sending transactional email (licence keys, verification codes, support replies)
• Google reCAPTCHA: For protecting our login and forms from automated abuse
• Statcounter and Google Analytics: For aggregate website analytics
• Our hosting provider: For running the website and licence servers
• Legal requirements: If required by law or to protect our rights

5. Data Security

We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your personal data, including encryption in transit (HTTPS) and secure storage practices.

6. Data Retention

We retain your licence and account information for as long as your licence is active, and for a reasonable period afterwards so we can reissue keys and honour support. Payment and transaction records are kept for the period required by UK tax law (generally six years). You may request deletion of your data by contacting us at info@grammarindex.com.

7. Your Rights

8. Children's Privacy

The Grammar Index is used in educational settings, including by schools on behalf of pupils. We do not knowingly collect personal data directly from children. Accounts and purchases are intended to be made by adults (aged 18 or over); where a school or institution buys licences, purchases are made by authorised staff and the school is responsible for the lawful basis for any pupil use. In-app progress, scores and exercise records stay on the device and are never uploaded to us.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page with an updated effective date.
